The leader, 32-year-old geologist Otto Nordenskjöld was the nephew of Adolf Nordenskjöld, who had discovered the Northeast Passage across the top of Siberia. Antarctic left Gothenburg on 16 October 1901 and arrived in the South Shetland Islands in January 1902.
